As June rolls in, more and more activities are taking place here at Edison for the graduating seniors of 2025. To maintain the excitement and uphold Edison’s annual traditions, the date for the Senior Barbecue has been revealed. It will take place on June 13th, 2025, which happens to be 5 days before the day of graduation.
Many students have high expectations for this event and have been waiting for the day it will arrive; some are a little underwhelmed due to the scheduling. As graduation rehearsals are also taking place on this day, which happens to fall on Friday the 13th, it has been found to be a little inconvenient.
“I wish it was a bit earlier so we could have time to let teachers and other students (not seniors) sign yearbooks during that time,” said Charles D’Silva.
As seen from this quote, some students aren’t exactly pleased with the date on which the Senior Barbecue has been scheduled. As there are only a limited number of days left in the school year, we can get to have people to sign yearbooks, and so this realistically leaves only that day to do it. It is also seen to undermine the barbecue because people will be more focused on graduation rehearsal and other activities revolving around it, rather than the barbecue.
When asking more students about the scheduling, we got more responses, such as, “I think it should be moved, just because things may be disorganized,” said Sonia Hookumchand
Many of whom feel this way, but unfortunately, there are no other options for when this can take place. As June 13th is one of the last school days graduating seniors have left, apart from June 18th being graduation, and their last day being on June 26th. There are no other days for it to be rescheduled on which is upsetting to many.
Lapki Kwong states how he feels that the senior barbeque will be a “bittersweet moment and mostly signing yearbooks gonna be pretty sad but fun.” He’s right, the senior barbecue will be a sentimental moment for all, as it’s one of the last events of the year. As the laughter fills the air, while students sign their yearbooks, with the mix of smoking charcoal.
We also asked our senior class what food they are expecting to see at the barbecue. From all the students that we interviewed, we have received a large spectrum of responses. For example, Jibril Dupass stated, “ I am expecting to see Hot dogs, burgers, and cold drinks.” For the most part, at the minimum, this is what should be included at the barbecue.
In addition, Queena Xin Zheng stated, “ I’m expecting meat kebabs, barbecued meat in general!” Kebabs sound like a great and unique choice for the barbecue.
Lastly, Margarita and Johnson Cristale said that they are expecting halal options for the Muslim students who are looking to take part in the event. Johnson Cristale even went as far as to state, “I am hoping all of the food is halal and there is no pork involved.”
Overall, the seniors have a high expectation for the food provided at this barbecue, hoping they have a wide variety of different cuisines. Many seniors also feel that the meat should be halal so that everyone present is able to enjoy the food, with no group of people excluded.
To wrap everything up, the senior barbecue this year has been controversial due to scheduling conflicts and the fact that seniors will have to partake in graduation rehearsal beforehand. This hasn’t sat well with the majority of seniors in Edison. Many feel as if this is unfair and undermines the entire point of the barbecue. This is supposed to be one of the final events that seniors get to experience before the end of high school; the fact that they won’t be able to fully cherish it is upsetting to many.
There are still high expectations for this barbecue, and the seniors still hold faith in our Edison team. We hope that the barbecue will be a large success and the students will be able to enjoy one of their final senior events for the year.
