On June 11 2026, Edison’s Black Student Union (BSU) and LatinX club will be hosting a watch party at the Edison cafe for the 2026 World Cup. This event will bring the students of Thomas A Edison CTE High school together as a community
The event gives students a chance to come together and enjoy one of the biggest sporting events in the world while celebrating different cultures. Both clubs hope the watch party will help build connections between students and create a fun, welcoming environment for the school community.
The event featured the very first game of the World Cup 2026, Mexico Vs. South Africa.
This event was in collaboration with BSU and Latinx as it was seen as an opportunity for the clubs to work together. This is “due to the fact that it was South Africa against Mexico. But besides that, both clubs are great and we worked together to get it done,” Samir Taylor, the BSU secretary, said.
Though this was the final event for the clubs this year, the goal was to have “everyone feel welcome and we wanted to replicate what can happen if 2 groups collaborate. We hope students can learn competitiveness and also to enjoy their last event before the school year is over. We want people to have fun and feel comfortable and support both groups,” Samir Taylor said.
When asked during half time, “I’m enjoying it so far, I like that they had different types of foods,” Edith Martinez said. The event offered tacos, empanadas, fruit, chips and drinks.
“I think it really did a great job at bringing together students at Edison, even people from different countries and backgrounds attended to cheer on the teams with their friends,” Kelly Guroodat said.
Though many students were there for the vibes, many were also there to support their country. “I’m rooting for Mexico because that’s where me and my parents are from,” Edith Martinez said.
The game resulted in a victory for Mexico with a score board of 2-0. But the world cup offers a total of 104 games with many more watch parties to come.
Beyond the watch party held at Edison, New York City will be hosting many more watch parties all across the city. This is as they will be the host of the World Cup for the second time since the world cup has begun. They will take place in the cities of the parks, plazas, and even theaters.
New York City has even more to offer. According to NYC Tourism + Conventions, from June 11 to July 19, 2026, Mayor Zohran Mamdani launched a six-week program that allows fans to eat, drink, and watch World Cup matches at nearly 600 restaurants across all five boroughs for 26 dollars.
As the World Cup continues throughout the summer, Students will have additional chances to enjoy the cultures represented in the World Cup and support their favorite teams. Many attendees saw the watch party as an example of how sports can unite people at Edison and beyond.
