AI in the classroom: Should students be concerned?

Artificial intelligence has been increasingly used by both students and teachers; the way that they use it differs. A lot of teachers see the vision of using AI as a way to make and create things easier. Advancements in technology have made it easier for teachers to teach their students; teachers have a little more time to grade and correct students’ work.

However, there are some ethical ways to use AI, and teachers should have some guidelines on how to use AI. Using artificial intelligence from third parties can lead to privacy issues on both ends.

“I don’t think there is any one generative AI platform that is the most reliable. They all have the same basic architecture and are limited. The best thing you can do is not treat it as an oracle or source of absolute truth. It has many biases and errors,” said Professor Sibilin, from York College.

Artificial intelligence can be found all over our lives. As we progress into the digital age, more and more things are getting smarter and simpler for us, but on the internet, simpler does not mean safer for either users or the companies. 

“Always check multiple sources, including different AI platforms for comparison. And remember that there are still many times when the best sources of information are not going to be AI, but going to the sources yourself,” said Professor Sibilin.

At the end of the day better for students to do their own research; artificial intelligence is not always going to be perfect, and many are still being developed. Students should not rely on artificial intelligence to do all of their research and findings. 

Sometimes, AI might create its sources or have hallucinations. Artificial intelligence is a great tool for a lot of different things, but it is flawed at times. It is still best to use your human intelligence and brain to create meaningful things.

I use AI ethically by using my own words and thoughts when writing recommendation letters, emails or any other type of correspondence. I don’t want to sound perfect. I want to sound authentic,” said teacher Sandra Cruz, Web and App design for TAEHS.

There are a lot of good uses for artificial intelligence, but when teachers are the ones using it, they should think more about the way that they use, especially if it might affect students. There are no regulations yet on how teachers could use artificial intelligence, but teachers should prioritize the safety and privacy of their students. 

Students don’t like that their teachers use artificial intelligence if it puts them at risk of having their personal information exposed. As we get deeper into the digital world, there should be set regulations for what artificial intelligence can be used for in a learning environment, and what things shouldn’t be permitted.

“I use ai for research purposes or when I need help understanding a topic when I’m testing those are the main uses I have for it. I used to use it also to ask for advice on college rec, but I don’t think its that reliable so I stopped,” said Ramanjot Kaur, 17 years old, TAEHS student in the Web and App Development class.

Students also use artificial intelligence as an opportunity to learn and study. Students use artificial intelligence as a means of learning, while teachers are being pushed to use artificial intelligence as a means to make their jobs easier. Students and teachers are both being exposed to artificial intelligence without any rules or regulations, it is allowing students to not learn and rely on something else to their work for them. 

The dangers of artificial intelligence are not that it helps students or teachers, it is that it generates ideas that the students should’ve been creating. It replaces the students’ intelligence and humanity. There should be a limit to how to use artificial intelligence in any environment, but especially in the learning environment, where students are developing a sense of self and creating their habits.

“I know a teacher who uses Al and with her I’ve had a very negative experience. It seems every aspect of her class is done with ai and it makes the class very difficult. For example if you can use ai to generate anything she can easily generate many slides in great detail about a topic she deems important but to the students feels very filler,” Kaur said.

Teachers using artificial intelligence in the classroom also affects the students learning from them. If a teacher over-relies on a generating application, and the teacher does not know what they themselves are teaching it creates confusion for the students and leaves no space for questions or curiosity. Students should know that their teachers know what they’re teaching and understand the topic. 

Artificial intelligence doesn’t just affect our classrooms it also affects earth and the way we use it has actual environmental damage. Big data centers use fresh water to cool all of their equipment, the same water we consume and need to survive. 

“I was surprised that using AI can cause environmental damage. I need to be more informed on how far this damage can go and its permanent implications to our societies and world,” Ms. Cruz said.

Teachers using artificial intelligence is not the biggest concern for students, it is the way they use it. Artificial intelligence allows teachers to spend a little less time doing repetitive tasks such as creating slides or videos, but these small tasks used in the classroom are essential to the way students learn.\
