School breaks used to mean big expensive trip plans, but now many students choose cheaper, local activities because of rising costs. As a result students were adjusting their budgets while still trying to enjoy their time off with family and friends.
The main issue has been that traveling is expensive and not everyone can afford it or has permission to do so. Because of that many looked for alternative low cost activities closer to home instead.
Jacqueline Gateau, Senior, said she kept a budget in mind while spending time with friends. “I did have a budget when I was hanging out with my friends because I didn’t receive my work paycheck at the time so I had to save some of the money I still have left from my other paycheck,” she said as she spoke of her experience with managing her budget during the spring break to have fun.
Jacqueline also said that she did not travel anywhere during spring break and instead spent time playing video games and going out for brunch with her family. The most memorable part for her was having a break from school stress.
Another student, Lubna Trisha, senior, said that she mostly stayed home and relaxed.
“Yes, I tried to keep a small budget and not spend too much money,” Lubna said. Only spending time catching up on sleep, watching shows and spending more time with her family while keeping in mind her budget. Showing that some students used the break to slow down and stay close to home.
Sebastian Santos, junior, had a different but still affordable spring break. He did not travel anywhere but still found ways to stay active and busy. He mentioned going for walks, playing soccer, volunteering, and studying for his SAT. “I tried to not spend too much money. I set a budget of $200 for the break,” he said.
Together the three students have shown that spring break does not always have to mean expensive trips or big vacations. For many it can also mean working, relaxing, spending time with family and friends, and finding low cost ways to enjoy their time off.
