The untold love story of John F. Kennedy, Jr. and Carolyn Bessette released a series covering their romance called “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette” they did a triple-episode premiere on February 12, 2026. The timeline of this series plays in order of when they met up until their tragedy.
The first episode opens with us seeing John’s (Paul Anthony Kelly) life under the spotlight being the son of the 35th president John F. Kennedy. Then we get to learn about Carolyn (Sarah Pidegon) who worked in Calvin Klein and was moving up in ranks slowly.
In the show the couple first met at a charity gala and Calvin introduced them to each other. They start talking and John is captivated by her and starts asking for her number. Carolyn is unsure and says no and she leaves so she doesn’t get into trouble by her other boss.
This meet up was however not true in real life. In real life Carolyn Bessette and John F. Kennedy Jr first met in Calvin Klein where he had a fitting. They seemed to connect well but he was in a long term relationship with actor Daryl Hannah and would later date for two more years after Carolyn and John’s first meet up.
I liked how they did the meet up in the show but I would have liked it to have been more accurate and done more justice to the couples story.
The show was able to bring Carolyn and John’s story to life with these actors who look very similar to the real life couple. They were able to captivate the audience and keep them hooked, wanting them to know the whole story of John and Carolyn.
Analisa Jaikishun, a Junior, thinks the show isn’t accurate.
“I don’t think that the show was accurate because no one truly knows what goes on behind closed doors and most times shows need conflict and emotional moments to grab the audience attention so they tend to make things seem more extreme than they were,” Jaikishun said.
This is true we don’t know the true story of what really happened between them but with the show we are able to see these characters’ struggles and see how fame and the spotlight can play a big role in a relationship.
In the show the couple go on a date and shortly start dating in secret. They also did this in real life because Carolyn didn’t like the spotlight and she didn’t want the attention. She wanted her life to be private but you can’t have that when the person you’re dating is widely known. John respected that and didn’t force her into the limelight and let them enjoy their private time together.
In the show they heavily romanticize John as a loyal man who only had eyes for Carolyn. When in real life this wasn’t true John was known as being disloyal and being with many girls while with Carolyn even when they got married he was speculated to have many affairs after.
Kelly Guroodat, a Junior, thinks that the show was romanticized.
“The show does romanticize and distort real events so the audience can be more captivated with the show. Although the show is based on a lot of real events, a lot of them were modified to be more romantic and dramatic,” Guroodat said.
One of the most iconic scenes in the show and in real life was Carolyn and big fight in Battery Park in 1996. They were seen fighting in the park and Carolyn pushing and shoving at John. It was alleged he ripped off the engagement ring and walked away shortly after Carolyn ran and jumped at him and they continued arguing.
In the show their fight was about him denying allegations of them being engaged. This upset Carolyn and this would lead to an argument at the park. In the show after this fight and before they were officially married they struggled. John and his article George and Carolyn leaving Calvin Klein because of media harassment surrounding her relationship with John.
When they finally got married in the show and real life it was private and there were barely any photos showing the intimate wedding. After the wedding and honeymoon Carolyn and John went back to New York and everything changed. The paparazzi would wait outside their apartment waiting to get a photo of the couple.
In the show this greatly affected Carylon because she already didn’t like the spotlight but now she couldn’t go anywhere and now it was worse than before and it led to her not leaving at all for a while.
In the final episode it is July 16, 1999 and John decides he wants to fly the plane which would later lead to tragedy. The plan was they were going to drop off Lauren Bessette at Martha’s vineyard and they would continue to Hyannis port where they would attend a family wedding. In the show we see John start realizing something is going on and Carolyn comforts him while Lauren sits in the back and they seem to accept it and John tries his best to keep flying and the scene ends.
Their death was a tragedy that not only affected the Kennedy family, but the Bessette family, which lost two daughters Carolyn and Lauren Bessette in the crash.
I think the show really brought their characters to life and even though it wasn’t 100% they were able to give us a good love story that ended in tragedy.
