Sports awards night is a night to celebrate the accomplishments for student athletes for their hard work throughout the year. This night reflects on a season of hard work, celebrating their teammates, and taking pride in their achievements regardless of whether they received an individual award.
Sports awards night is an opportunity to recognize the hard work, teamwork, and dedication demonstrated by student athletes. This event brings student athletes and coaches together to celebrate both individual and team achievements.
Mr. Wang, the head coach of Edison’s tennis team, says that the night is a rare moment to put a spotlight on his team, pointing out that their off school matches makes it hard for the school community to notice their success.
“The team has won the division five times consecutively and we don’t get our flowers for it. This is special for us because we don’t get recognition normally,” Mr. Wang said.
This event helped give students appreciation for their accomplishments.
For student athletes who took home individual awards, the recognition was a combination of overcoming challenges that they faced season long.
Raven Birch, a track athlete, found the mental aspect of the sport to be her hurdle. However, being surrounded by her teammates made the difference.
“The environment and going to the same school and classes with your teammates makes me want to play more,” Raven said.
For Raven, the award is a proof of that effort. “It means a lot because all my hard work pays off and it genuinely means something,” she said.
Caroline Zhang, a captain of the tennis team, faced the challenge of balancing tennis with her packed senior schedule. Despite this, she was able to manage both with the support from friends and family that kept her motivated.
“My dad and I played tennis a lot over the summer which made me look forward to joining the team when I transferred to Edison and a bunch of my friends which motivated me to keep going,” Caroline said.
While she appreciates the award, she recognizes that the true value lies in the experience itself.
“It shows the years of commitment being recognized, and even if I didn’t get this award it wouldn’t change anything but this is additional recognition,” Caroline said.
Even for students who did not receive an individual award, the night held significant meaning. Many students found joy from cheering on their friends and reflecting on their own self improvement.
“It means a lot because watching my teammates win makes me happy, I want the best for everyone,” Farsat Rahman said.
Through the encouragement of his coaches and his fellow teammates, he says he has found new motivation. “I became more athletic and I always want to better myself,” Farsat said.
“All my friends won stuff and I’m really happy for them, it’s a nice way to hang out with them,” Ayndrila Paul, a member of Thomas Edison’s girl’s badminton team, said.
Even though she wasn’t a starter for the team, she was still proud of her role on the team. “Just getting playtime, I wasn’t one of the starters but my performance in the exhibition was proudful,”Ayndrila said.
Ayndrila noticed that being an athlete on a sports team has helped her develop important life skills. “It has helped me with communication, time management, connected me to more people and the school.”
Sports Awards Night is more than just an event for handing out medals. It is a chance for students to pause and reflect on their experiences and realize how much they have grown throughout the year.
“It’s a great reflective time to look back, where we came from, what got us here, and it’s the last year for the seniors so it’s a big event for them,” said junior varsity basketball coach, Mr. Burdick.
