“Good Days” were on our mind until Olivia Rodrigo came and crashed the party with her “Drivers License.”
Olivia Rodrigo, best known for her role in the Disney+ Series, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series became an overnight sensation after her song “Drivers License” took the music world by storm. Currently sitting at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100’s, Olivia Rodrigo has managed to top artists, such as Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, and Dua Lipa, at only seventeen years old. The song has caught the attention of pop sensation Taylor Swift and has been used in over 1.7 million videos on TikTok.
The single tells the story of heartbroken Olivia watching her ex move on. Said ex, is her High School Musical: The Musical: The Series co-star, Joshua Bassett. The pair captured viewers’ attention for being the modern day Troy and Gabriella with songs, such as “I Think I Kinda, You Know” and “Just For A Moment” highlighting that classic Disney love that leaves viewers teary eyed.
Bassett and Rodrigo have undeniable chemistry on-screen, which sparked rumors of a relationship between the two. Bassett and Rodrigo’s breakup is rumored to have been about the age difference between the two; Joshua being 20 and Olivia, 17. Shortly after their relationship ended, Bassett was seen with Disney star Sabrina Carpenter in Instagram posts and TikTok videos, sparking the ultimate Disney love triangle that has fans on the edge of their seats.
“And you’re probably with that blonde girl, who always made me doubt,” Rodrigo sings angelically with notes of pain and agony in “Drivers License.” These lyrics were a direct hit to Sabrina Carpenter, as she turns out to be that blonde girl. Carpenter responded to Olivia in her song “Skin” with lyrics, such as “Maybe you didn’t mean it, maybe blonde was the only rhyme.”
Oh and that’s not all. Joshua Bassett released his single “Lie Lie Lie” shortly after “Drivers License.” In an Instagram story, Joshua said “I wrote ‘Lie Lie Lie’ after I found out a friend had been lying about me behind my back for a long time.” Bassett’s song was written over a year ago and it remains unclear if the song is about Olivia. Fans of Olivia claim that Joshua is “trying to steal Olivia’s thunder”.
One question remains nebulous; was this a publicity stunt or just a mere coincidence?
“It wasn’t at all a coincidence that these three songs were all dropped within the same week of each other and the three artists are involved in some sort of love triangle. This possibly could’ve been a publicity stunt but people love drama so it’ll continue to be viewed as just that,” HSMTMTS fan and Olivia Rodrigo ride-or-die, Bianca Almonte said.
There is no denying that this could be one big PR stunt in hopes for these Disney stars to gain momentum. But, the stunt seems to be working with “Drivers License” remaining at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 as the internet cannot seem to get enough of this love triangle.
It’s safe to say we’ll all be taking a trip to the suburbs reminiscing about our previous lovers. Thanks a lot, Olivia.
