Hot Takes tests how well people handle the heat, literally and figuratively. In the first episode, we feature Johnson Cristales, Edison’s first MIT undergraduate, sharing insights about high school life.

“What’s one thing you wish you knew before senior year?

“Even though I was told ‘you should chill your senior year’ I wish I knew that better and kind of internalized that.”

Johnson admits that while he was advised to relax and enjoy senior year, he wishes he had taken that advice to heart. Senior year can be a time to savor the final moments of high school, but many students, like Johnson, only realize this when it’s almost over.

“What’s the best lunchroom meal?”

“Wedges are pretty good but if we’re moving on to more general meals, its between the chicken tenders or the grilled cheese sandwich.”

When it comes to cafeteria favorites, Johnson ranks chicken tenders and grilled cheese at the top. Another crowd favorite is the bean burrito, although some students may be hesitant to give it a try.

“What’s the best way to balance school, college applications, and also having fun?”
“In order to not get overwhelmed you really need to have a schedule.”

Johnson stresses the importance of having a schedule to stay organized and reduce stress. Many students overlook the value of planning, which can lead to feeling overwhelmed and wasting time figuring out what to do next. A structured plan helps manage school, college applications, and personal time effectively.

“What would you say the best high school event or tradition is?”

“I don’t know if every school does this but we have this thing called fright night.”

Fright Night, a Halloween-themed event where students dress up, enjoy music, and meet new people, is a highlight of Edison’s school year. Another favorite tradition is Bollywood Night. While it may seem geared toward a specific community, the vibrant music, traditional attire, and lively dances create an inclusive and enjoyable experience for everyone.

“What is your biggest ‘I should have done this earlier’ regret?”

“Looking into everything that our school had to offer… I only started getting involved in school-like competitions, afterschool activities, and just clubs in general in 11th grade.”

Johnson regrets not exploring all of Edison’s opportunities earlier. Whether it’s clubs, competitions, or after-school activities, these experiences allow students to develop new skills, meet like-minded peers, and feel more connected to the school community. Getting involved earlier can make a significant difference in a student’s high school experience.

“What is the best thing about high school that you are going to miss?”

“Our trips to Six Flags are like really really fun and going with friends.”

For Johnson, the school trips, like those to Six Flags, stand out as some of the best memories. Events such as SkillsUSA and other field trips provide unique experiences that bring students closer together. Beyond the trips, the daily chance to connect with peers of similar ages and interests is something many students will miss after graduation.
