New Season, New Team: Edison Varsity Aims for the Top

Edison High School’s Boys Varsity Basketball Team has had a strong season boasting a 7-3 record, and holding third place in their division. Their annual homecoming game showcased the squad’s potential as they defeated Beach Channel Educational Campus in dominant fashion 65-36, continuing their trend of blowout victories by an average margin of 35 points per game.

This year’s team brings a new dynamic, filled with new players and a revamped coaching staff, led by Coach Ryan Gompers. These changes have built excitement among the fans and players alike, raising the stakes for this season.

In an interview, Coach Gompers shared insights on his journey and the team’s goals. When asked about his motivation for coaching, he reflected on his own experiences as a player.

“I’ve been coaching this team for what is now my fourth season here at Edison,” Gompers shared. “Growing up, I played in high school and at various other levels. I had many coaches throughout my life that were not up to par and didn’t know how to treat the kids the right way, so I always felt it was my mission to get in there and coach, making sure they had fun while also learning discipline and the game, the correct way.”

Coach Gompers has high expectations for this season due to the fact that the roster has underclassmen and experienced seniors.

“We have three or four seniors and even a freshman who’s scored double digits in one of the games. With returning seniors like Khoury, Uzoma, Joel, and Andre providing guidance, we’re aiming for a division title and a deep run in the city championships,” Gompers explained.

This season also sees the addition of three new assistant coaches: Coach Ty, Coach Shake, and Coach Moore.

“Coach Shake, a former pro-basketball player overseas, has been unbelievable at strength and conditioning, ensuring our players stay strong through the fourth quarter. Coach Moore, a former college basketball player, has been instrumental in developing our young big men, especially our sophomore center. And Coach Ty handles everything from basketball to off-court responsibilities,” said Gompers. “They have been instrumental in our success this year.”

Returning senior Andre Bisessar highlighted the impact of the coaching staff.

“They definitely push you to the max,” Bisessar said. “A lot more conditioning than last year, with certain coaches for certain things. Coach Shake handles conditioning, while Coach Moore and Coach Ty focus on skill work.”

Bisessar also emphasized the importance of the team’s fresh legs this season.

“There’s more underclassmen than older kids. Half the team is sophomores, and there’s even a freshman on the team. Last year was purely just juniors and seniors,” Bisessar explained.

Team captain Khoury Mason highlighted the positive influence of the coaching staff.

“We have many different coaches that focus on different aspects of the game.” Mason explains how crucial the addition of the new coaching staff has been for the team this year explaining “It helps us build a stronger team altogether,” Mason said.

The team’s performance has captured the attention of the Edison community, in which basketball remains one of the most exciting sports here at Edison. Packed stands at the homecoming game underscored the enthusiasm surrounding this year’s squad. With a challenging schedule ahead, the Edison Varsity Squad is going to do everything possible to meet expectations and go deep into the playoffs.

“I also want to give a shout out to pretty much the whole team and the managers…The ship doesn’t run smoothly without them so a big shout out to them and thank you,” Gompers said.

“Big things are on the horizon if everything clicks,” Gompers said.
