Spring break is coming up. If you’re the type to stay in and cozy up to a movie with a candle burning and a face mask on, I’ve got some recommendations for you. These movies are classics of the early 2000s and grab the appeal of Gen Z. Grab your blankets, popcorn, chocolate, and maybe a box of tissues.
5. 27 Dresses (2008)
Running Time: 1hr 47m
I’m going to keep it real with you. I did not enjoy the first 40 minutes of this movie. The only reason I kept watching was that a friend of mine had recommended I watch it. He watches a ton of movies and personally rates them so I trusted him, and I do not regret it at all. In my opinion, the movie starts when the two love interests Jane (Katherine Heigl) and Kevin (James Marsden) begin to see each other more often.
“The actors had real chemistry for real. They looked good together. That’s the main thing I look for when ranking a rom-com or chick flick. If the two people look like they like each other, if they have passion,” said Brian Nauth.
Coming from someone with a short attention span, It is a slow watch in the beginning, but its comedic moments make it worth watching until the end. The movie covers family issues, realizing your purpose, and putting yourself first. It’s a rom-com, but it isn’t known by many people my age. I would rate this movie a 7/10.
4. Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
Running Time: 2hr
“Crazy Rich Asians” dives into the world of Asia’s most elite. They are the wealthiest of the wealthy and have the best of everything. Rachel Wu and her boyfriend Nick Young travel to Singapore for Nick’s best friend’s wedding. Rachel is enveloped in the extravagant lifestyle of Nick’s family. This movie tackles topics such as wealth discrimination and discrimination against different classes.
“The movie is so much more than two people falling in love. It showed the fact that they were really discriminatory against Rachel because she was poorer than them. She wasn’t from wealthy people,” said movie enthusiast, Brian Nauth.
It was a beautiful movie to watch. I loved how every aspect of this movie was done to the highest level possible. The fashion, parties, and drama were top-tier in this movie.
“I loved watching the character spend money like it was nothing. Wear million-dollar rings, drive Bugattis, drive this, drive that,” said Brian Nauth.
The movie was filmed in Singapore. The culture there is incredibly rich and the views are stunning. The movie shelled out millions of dollars to recreate the lavish lifestyle of the characters. I rate it an 8/10.
3. The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
Running Time: 1hr 46m
“The Devil Wears Prada” is an iconic movie about a young journalist, Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) in NYC landing a job at the biggest fashion magazine, “Runway”. She becomes the assistant of editor-in-chief, Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep). Andy works her way up on the ladder of fashion and learns to navigate the fashion world through the tough ways of her boss Miranda Priestly. The fashion in this movie was stunning. Each character had chic looks in every scene. They were seen wearing clothing and jewelry from designer brands like Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Marc Jacobs, and many more.
“I love the fashion. I liked the wealth. I love watching Miranda Priestly. I think she was a boss. She knew exactly what she wanted. She knew exactly what she needed and she made it happen. She would do whatever she needed for her career, her wealth, and her children, and I respect that,” said Brian Nauth.
Viewers agree that the casting for this movie was perfect.
“Anything Anne Hathaway stars in is immediately going to turn to gold. I’m automatically going to watch it. That was like the selling point. I also really like anything Meryl Streep is in. So the combination of those two is chefs’ kiss,” said Brian Nauth.
“The Devil Wears Prada” was an amazing movie. I watched it many years ago, but it is still fresh in my memory. I rate it a 9/10. I simply loved it.
2. How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days (2003)
Running Time: 1hr 56m
Taking second place is “How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days’ starring Kate Hudson and Matthew McConohay. It’s a classic movie. Andie Anderson (Kate Hudson) is writing an article about how to scare a guy away in ten days or less while her competition Ben (Matthew McConaughey) is writing about how to make a woman fall in love with you in ten days or less. The two meet at a bar hoping to accomplish their goals but instead fall for each other. This movie was hilarious and had several iconic scenes. Without a doubt, it is one of my favorite rom-coms. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a cheesy 2000s movie to watch.
“How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days” is the funniest movie on this list. It made me laugh the most out of any other movie. I’ve never seen a movie like this. It was unique,” said Brian Nauth.
The two characters have amazing chemistry with each other and truly bring the movie to life.
“The two actors they picked, Kate Hudson, and Matthew McConughy had good chemistry. You could see it. They had that sparkle in their eyes,” said Brian Nauth.
The plot of this movie is one of a kind. The acting is so good that you start to get secondhand embarrassment from the characters. Overall, I recommend this movie. I give it a rating of 9/10.
1.10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
Running Time: 1hr 37m
Swooping in at first place, “10 Things I Hate About You”, is a classic movie sure to leave an impact on you. It follows the relationship between Kat Stratford (Julia Stiles) and Patrick Verona
(Heath Ledger). Julia Stiles plays the headstrong independent high school girl who doesn’t seem to care about anything or anyone. She gets into an unexpected relationship with the school’s bad boy, Patrick Verona. What stands out to me in this movie is that it has an enemies-lovers plot. The movie starts slowly making you wonder if you’re just wasting your time. It then starts to pick up when the two characters start interacting with each other.
“In the beginning, the characters are not very likable. You kind of hate all of them until they begin to interact with one another,” said Saima Sabur.
“10 Things I Hate About You” is a 90’s classic. It is truly an unforgettable movie. If you’re going to watch any movie on this list, let it be this one. I rate this movie a 10/10.
