As the academic year progresses and summer approaches, students are constantly looking into one key opportunity that could shape their futures: internships.
While often viewed as optional, internships have become a stable option for students seeking to gain real world experience, build professional networks, and gain a competitive edge in the job market. Here at Edison, we have various internship programs available for students, all of which are different in their own ways.
“There are several internships available to students. They are dependent on grade level, interest, and shop. We are always looking for additional opportunities a well,” work-based learning coordinator, Ms. Rosario said.
A Classroom Beyond Campus
Internships offer something that traditional classroom learning can’t always provide: hands-on experience. Whether it’s working on completely different job sites and locations, internships allow students to apply what they’ve learned in class to real-life situations. This can also allow students to gain experience now rather than later. This is so that when students graduate and/or enter the workforce, they will have the soft skills that are required to be successful in their careers.
“Internships offer so many benefits. The students will learn what employers call soft skills. These are skills that are not taught in the classroom how to punch in and punch out, following a schedule, and submitting hours for time approval,” Ms. Rosario said.
But, students must only acquire internships that are through the school, so their schedule can be altered. Therefore, students will not have their schedules altered for internships that aren’t through the school, according to Ms. Rosario.
Building Skills, Connections, and Confidence
Beyond skill development, internships are also a chance to build a professional network. Meeting people in your chosen field can lead to job referrals, mentorship opportunities, and insights into industry trends. Building connections is extremely important because they are what help you later on in the future. Most internships can be obtained through shop classes and the referral of other teachers.
Building skills in possible future internships is just as important.
“Through this internship, my public speaking skills have significantly improved. Additionally, I learned new skills such as time management, multitasking, knowing how to communicate effectively, and lesson planning as a teacher,” Raiba Zaman, an internship student, said.
“I have learned several different skills since I started the internship like teamwork, time management, communication, how to manage a classroom environment, etc. I was also very nervous speaking in front of a huge group of people but this is really helping me improve on that,” Mayisa Rahman, an internship student, said.
For many, internships also boost confidence. Navigating workplace culture, taking on responsibilities, and getting feedback from supervisors help students mature both professionally and personally.
A Foot into the Work Force
In today’s competitive job market, having internship experience on a resume can make a big difference. This is especially since jobs don’t want to see one doing the bare minimum. They want to see someone who will do more than what’s expected of them and do above and beyond. By participating in an internship, we can see this initiative.
Employers often prefer candidates who already understand workplace expectations. In some cases, internships even turn into full-time positions.
“This internship has made my plans more achievable since I have learned how to make points and present my ideas that will help me reach my goals,” Raiba Zaman said.
Tips for Landing an Internship
Finding the right internship can be intimidating , but it starts with research and preparation. Students should check with the school’s coordinator Ms. Rosario , send emails and messages with questions you may have about any internships. You should also create a strong resume that is up to date.
Be prepared to present yourself. This means practicing speaking with confidence and speaking professionally. You should also have a very strong resume showcasing your skills, events you participated in, education, work experience, awards, and any extracurricular activities.
Students can contact Ms. Rosario as well as their shop teachers as resources for information about internships for the fall term.
A Launchpad for the Future
Internships aren’t just something you add to your resume they’re launchpads for careers, offering invaluable experience, clarity, and direction. Whether you’re exploring interests or preparing for your dream job, internships provide a unique opportunity to grow both professionally and personally.
For students willing to take the leap, the experience can be transformative.
